Death In Rome, Herr Lounge Corps, Zaubergeist
A night of strange melodies and familiar voices: December brings an unusual meeting of dark pop, acoustic music and neofolk to the Balkans
What if Haddaway, Lana Del Rey or Miley Cyrus started writing dark acoustic music? Death In Rome has been answering that question convincingly for years
The German project takes pop anthems from different decades and drops them into an entirely different reality. Anonymity, a stage shrouded in smoke, an acoustic guitar and apocalyptic vocals — looks and sounds like neofolk in its purest form. But beneath the cold musical aesthetic, listeners recognize the lyrics of «What Is Love», «Wrecking Ball», «Summertime Sadness» and other Billboard hits, suddenly revealing their unexpected side. The irony works here alongside the music. Death In Rome plays with the genre’s strict clichés while creating a contrast where even the most cheerful song turns into a soundtrack to the end of the world
The evening will be complemented by Herr Lounge Corps — the project of Slovenian composer and pianist Miroslav Snejdr, known to fans of the genre for his contributions to recordings and live performances by Death In June. In his solo work, Miro builds melancholic musical sketches with piano, accordion and other live instruments, making the end result sound like the soundtrack to a silent film that never existed
The Belgrade show will also feature Serbian project Zaubergeist from Vojvodina, bringing a hefty dose of music somewhere between folk and funeral country, straight from the abyss of the dried-up Pannonian Sea
